Aspen Foster’s “Why Did You Go And Say” Named March “Best Song Of The Month”
Aspen Foster, a veteran, pop/rock singer/songwriter based in Phoenix, AZ, has won the SongwriterUniverse ‘Best Song Of The Month’ Contest for March, for his song ‘Why Did You Go And Say.’ This is one of three new songs he has recorded for his upcoming album project, which will be his first album of secular pop songs, following several Christian music releases.
‘Why Did You Go And Say’ is a graceful, acoustic rock tune, which is in the vein of ballad hits by the Counting Crows and the Goo Goo Dolls. The song provides a terrific showcase for Foster’s expressive lead and harmony vocals, plus his guitar and piano playing. ‘Why Did You Go And Say’ was expertly produced by Ken Mary (who has worked with Alice Cooper, the Beach Boys and Megadeth) at his SonicPhish Studio in Phoenix.
Foster was born and raised in Burlington, Iowa, and when he was 14, he moved with his family to Kansas City, MO. He first learned to play piano, and was inspired by listening to such artists as Michael McDonald, Elton John and Billy Joel. Although Foster was more into playing sports during high school, he did become a music major when he attended (and later graduated from) Mid-America Nazarene University near Kansas City.
Following college, Foster worked at several jobs, and he now does sales for an advertising agency. However, he has always remained an active songwriter and artist, releasing three Christian music albums. But most recently, Foster has decided to focus on creating pop/secular music. He has written and recorded three new pop songs: ‘Why Did You Go And Say,’ ‘Read Me For Who I Am’ and ‘It Won’t Be Long.’
Foster explained what ‘Why Did You Go And Say’ is about: ‘This song is about a couple who leave a relationship, and when they leave they feel compelled to justify themselves and say something. But in reality it would be better if they just left, instead of having to make a closing statement. People leave behind words that are like time bombs. So {in the song] I’m saying, ‘Why did you go and say that? It would have been easier if you just left.”
Currently, Foster is busy writing new material, and he is promoting his pop songs via the internet (MySpace, Facebook, Sonicbids) and to local radio stations. He is also playing gigs locally, and he is getting interest from a record label. ‘I am in negotiations with an independent label,’ said Foster. ‘They’ve expressed interest in producing and distributing my full-fledged album.’
